British family ‘asked not to be served by hotel’s black waiters’
A family of British holidaymakers were accused yesterday of telling the management of a five-star Florida hotel that they did not want to be waited on by black staff.
Court papers say that the family, whose principal member was named as Rodney Morgan, left the instruction when they checked into the beachside Ritz-Carlton in the city of Naples on February 28.
The family, whose other members are not identified, allegedly informed the hotel of their preference not to be served by “people of colour” or staff with “foreign accents”.
A note of their demand was allegedly made on behalf of Edward Staros, the hotel’s vice-president and managing director.
“As per Mr Staros this couple is very, very prejudice and do like like [sic] ppl of color or foreign accents,” was allegedly typed into the hotel’s computer system.
A black waiter says in a lawsuit that he suffered discrimination. Wadner Tranchant, 40, a Haitian-born US citizen, who has been at the hotel for 15 years, says that on March 12, the hotel “instructed the serving staff regarding the stated prejudice of the Morgan family” when they made a reservation for banquette seating at the hotel’s Grill Restaurant.
Mr Tranchant says he was not allowed to serve the Morgans because he was black.
The comments that follow the story are, in part, equally as depressing and as insidious as the subject of the article. Oh how I wish these people would wander my way. I'd drop acid in their wine and have at them with rubber hoses and Jeyes fluid whilst having a chummy sing-a-long to some of Compton's finest, NWA. A Clockwork Orange for a modern age if you will.

These “holiday-makers” were at the Ritz right down the road from where I live and I have to say the local radio programs picked up this story and ran with it! We could not believe, after all the talk we get about ugly Americans, that someone else would be uglier!!! I guarantee the rest of their so called holiday won’t be very restful now that word has gotten out about their preferences.
If the management had any backbone they should have ensured they were served only by Black waiters……..better still, refuse the booking.
At what level do profit margins make bigotry acceptable?
Why were they not vacationing in some ice-bound country where they wouldn’t have to run in to “people of colour”? Because they wanted to work on their tans, undoubtedly. Oh, the irony.

…there’s nothing like taking advantage of a situation. Seeking medical and psychological treatment because his boss told him he couldn’t serve a table a lunchtime? What a lying load of bollocks. Less down to the waiter in question I’d imagine and more down to his lawyers.

I was managing a restaurant once (please, forgive me. I was one of those cretins!) and had a couple request another server because the guy waiting on them was black. I oh-so-impolitely told them they could take their business elsewhere. They were not happy with me and wrote the owners (thankfully, it wasn’t a corporate owned restaurant). The owners let me write a reply to them. Needless to say, I suggested next time they make this request, they don’t send it in email form with their full names that and I would be forwarding it to surrounding restaurants and the best of luck to them with finding good service in our area again. I hope they ate at home for quite awhile. I never saw them again.
That families behaviour is beyond reprehensible, and the management double. Has societies mentality really travelled back to the 1930s?
